Catherine A. "Katie" Smiley Stevens, 104, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday morning, January 2, 2019, at Doey’s House, Hagerstown. She was the wife of the late Herbert Theodore Stevens, her husband of 57 years, who preceded her in death on January 29, 1993.
Born March 13, 1914, in Midland, she was a daughter of the late Elijah Hanley and Edna Mae Smiley. She was a 1932 graduate of Lonaconing High School; and studied at Frostburg Teachers College with Asher Edelman.
Mrs. Stevens was a life member of Washington Square United Methodist Church, Hagerstown, where she served as organist for 66 years; was past president of Methodist Women; and former chair of the Worship Committee.
She was past Worthy Matron of Hagerstown Chapter 89, Order of the Eastern Star; and for many years Grand Choir accompanist for the Grand Chapter of Maryland, Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Stevens taught piano for many years, and substituted as organist for many area churches.
Surviving is her granddaughter Bonnie Blue Hemenway and husband Pete of Rockledge, Florida; great grandson, Craig Hemenway and wife Allison of Denver, Colorado; great, great grandson, Jonathan Hemenway, also of Denver; niece and nephew Ruby Preston Thompson and Alan Preston of Midland; as well as a very special friend Jackie S. Purdham of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; and numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Stevens is preceded in death by her step-daughter Ruth Lee Morris; and sister, Golda Preston and Ruth Briggs.
The family will receive friends at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown, on Friday, January 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral will be at her church, Washington Square United Methodist Church, Hagerstown, on Saturday, January 5, 11:00 AM with her pastor, Rev. Jerry L. Lowans, officiating. Interment will be private in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
