David Stough Schwartz, 87, of Hagerstown, died on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 in Rockville, Maryland. He was the husband of the late Glendine Sanders Storey Schwartz, who died in 1984, and the late Barbara Hutchinson Tubbesing Schwartz, who died in 2007.
Born April 22, 1931, in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Frank Stough and Rachael Sleasman Schwartz.
Mr. Schwartz graduated from the Mercersburg Academy in 1949, and Franklin and Marshall College in 1953. Later that year he graduated from the United States Navy's Officer Candidate School of Newport, Rhode Island where he joined Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, whose motto "The Great Joy of Serving Others" aptly describes his life.
In 1953, David was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. He then served on active duty with the Navy as a Communications officer and Navigator and Operations Officer while it operated with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific and South China Sea, and the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1956, he left active duty and served once again in the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant.
Mr. Schwartz returned to civilian life and served as President of Central Chemical Corporation, living and working in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Butler Pennsylvania, Altoona, Pennsylvania, and lastly, Hagerstown. He enjoyed cultivating his father's peonies as he also cultivated many friendships. He was a lifelong member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, where he served in numerous positions, including Treasurer, Deacon, Elder, and President of the Consistory. He has also served as: Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Homewood Retirement Centers of the United Church of Christ; a member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Coffman Nursing Home; and President and member of the Board of Governors of Fountain Head Country Club.
Additionally Mr. Schwartz was a member of the Alumni Council of the Mercersburg Academy; the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts; Friendship Lodge #84 AF & AM Masonic Lodge; Morris Frock American Legion Post 42; and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378.
Surviving are his children: Marta Griggs Storey Armstrong and husband Richard of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Debra Blair Storey of Henderson, North Carolina, and Gilbert Scott Storey and wife Melinda Sue of Greensboro, North Carolina; four grandchildren: Adam Christopher and Danielle Sanders Armstrong, John Gilbert and Reichen Rivers Storey; and step children: Ann Tubbesing Bryans and husband George of Denver, Colorado, and Jane Tubbesing Peacemaker and husband Michael of Winchester, Virginia; and step grandchild, Nicholas James Jackson Peacemaker.
Also surviving are cousins: Donald Harding and wife Georgia, Nancy Harding Phillips, and Charles "Jim" Sleasman and wife Barbara; a niece-in-law, Pamela Craig-Roller and her daughter, Morna Roxane Craig.
Besides his spouses and parents, Mr. Schwartz was preceded death by his sister, Ellen Schwartz Roller; and his nephew, Frank Coiner Roller, III.
The family will receive friends at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown, on Sunday, May 20, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Zion Reformed United Church of Christ on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Kevin S. Munroe, will officiate. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, 201 North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740.
