Mabel Basore

Mrs. Mabel L. Palmer Basore, 91, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown.

Born July 22, 1920, in Funkstown, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Russel and Nora Mae Gouker Palmer.

She was the wife of the late George E. Basore who preceded her in death in 1989.

Mrs. Basore worked for the Department of Social Services for over thirty years working with of Foster Care, Adoption and Child Abuse.  Additionally, she co-owned Basore Oil Company with her husband where she served as Secretary/Treasurer

She graduated Hagerstown High School, Class of 1938; and from Bridgewater College in 1942.

Mabel was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, where she served as Superintendent  of the Junior High School Department, as Sunday School Teacher, with her husband served as Co-Director and Chairman of the Youth Department, and served on the Deacons Board and Chairman of Worship Commission.

She also served with the Board of Directors of Hagerstown Christian Women’s Club.

Since 1956 she was a member of the Hagerstown Business & Professional Women’s Club serving as President and Vice President, as well as Chairman of various committees.

Additionally, she served as President of the State Federation of Business & Professional Women, and Chairman of various committees; served on the National Federation Board of the Business & Professional Women, and with various committees; and Board of Directors of the Hagerstown Girls Club serving as a volunteer, Board President and Past Regional Chairman.

Mrs. Basore is survived by a niece and nephew, Judith A. Baker and husband George, and David L. Hebb all of Hagerstown; as well as a great niece Tammy A. Foster and husband Jeff; and great, great niece Jazzmyn E. Foster.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Jane R. White and Margaret E. Clipp Wickware.

The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is handling the arrangements.  There will not be calling at the funeral home.  The family will receive friends Saturday, July 21, beginning at 1:00 PM until time of a memorial service at 2 PM at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.  Her pastor, Rev. Edward L. Poling, will officiate.  Interment will be private in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 South Mulberry Street, Hagerstown, Maryland  21740; or to the Hagerstown Girls Club, 626 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, Maryland  21740.
