Mrs. Marguerite Teresa Wood Steen Isman, 85, of Hagerstown, died early Monday morning, March 24, 2025, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown. She was the wife of the late Warren Isman, former Fire Chief of Montgomery County, Maryland, and Fairfax County, Virginia who preceded her in death in 1991.
Born April 4, 1939, in San Francisco, California, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Wood and Louise Shanklin-Wood.
Mother, Grandmother, and friend to many, her house was always “open”. Not only may you have found family and friends, but perhaps some neighborhood children that she was sitting with for their parents. She was also a skilled seamstress, and often exchanged her services with neighbors who had other talents, coming together as a community to support each other. In her mid-thirties she completed an Associates Degree in Accounting at Massosoit College in Massachusetts, using that degree to work as a bank teller until retirement. She went all out for holidays, and her Easter Egg hunts are fondly remembered by her grandchildren as a highlight of the season.
A lifelong animal lover, she was rarely (if ever) without at least one pet. She adopted and fostered many animals throughout her long life, and occasionally gifting them to the care of family members in need of a furry friend.
Surviving are her children Emily Donley and husband David, Matt Steen and wife Diane, all of Hagerstown, and Carla Isman of Warren, Michigan, and Ted Isman and wife Stacey of Macomb, Michigan; and by step-children, Kenneth Isman and wife Joan of Laurel, and David Isman and wife Tammy of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her grandchildren David Adams and wife Kristal of Pocomoke City, Thomas Arnold of Greeneville, Tennessee, Virginia Curtis, and Charles Donley, both of Hagerstown, Gregory Isaacs of Silver Spring, Aaliyah and Tyson Isman, both of Michigan, Nathan Berg of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Tisha Rozanski and husband Adam of Frederick, and Jasmine Franklin and fiancée Gregory Thomas of Frederick; and by her great grandchildren Jonathan, Warren, Lexi, Takius, Connor, Bella, RaeLynn, Piper, and Ava.
Mrs. Isman will also be remembered, fondly, by her first spouse Isaiah Steen of Kingston, Massachusetts.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Isman was preceded in death by daughter Amy Franklin in 2009; and step-daughter Susan Isman in 2023.
The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is assisting the family with arrangements. Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Isman’s name to your local humane society or the ASPCA.
